Ukraine Russia US talks are underway in the United Arab Emirates, with President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing cautious hope that the discussions could become a step toward ending the war. The trilateral talks bring together delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States amid ongoing fighting and diplomatic pressure.
Donbas at the Center of UAE Talks
President Zelensky confirmed that the status of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region will be the main focus of the discussions in Abu Dhabi.
“The Donbas issue is key,” Zelensky said in a voice message to journalists. “It will be discussed, as well as the modality of how the three sides see it.”
Ukraine will be represented by a delegation, while Zelensky continues diplomatic engagements elsewhere.
Cautious optimism over possible breakthrough
The Ukrainian leader described the talks as an important but uncertain development.
“It’s a step hopefully towards ending the war but different things can happen,” he said.
The conflict in eastern Ukraine has remained one of the most sensitive and contested issues since Russia’s invasion, with Donbas continuing to see heavy fighting and civilian suffering.
Zelensky discussed Donbas with trump in Davos
Zelensky also revealed that he discussed the Donbas situation with US President Donald Trump during meetings in Davos.
According to Zelensky, the two leaders finalized discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine. They also talked about providing additional air defense missile systems to help Ukraine intercept Russian ballistic missiles.
“These systems are necessary to protect our people,” Zelensky noted.
Security guarantees and air defense needs
Ukraine has repeatedly called on allies to strengthen its air defense capabilities, especially as Russia continues to target infrastructure and civilian areas.
Zelensky said he hopes the current diplomatic momentum will lead to concrete results.
“I’m hoping for a positive result,” he added.
Regional and global attention on talks
The UAE-hosted talks have drawn international attention, as they represent one of the rare moments where Ukraine, Russia, and the US are simultaneously engaged in discussions connected to the war.
Analysts say any agreement on Donbas or security guarantees could shape the next phase of the conflict.
