University Teaching Hospital of Butare to Begin Treating Complex Diseases Including Cancer

The University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) has announced a major upgrade in its medical capacity, enabling it to treat complex diseases, including cancer, that previously required patients to seek care in Kigali or other specialized hospitals.

CHUB management confirmed that the hospital has acquired modern medical equipment, including cancer diagnostic tools, MRI scanners, and advanced imaging machines. These technologies will significantly improve diagnosis and treatment of serious illnesses and reduce patient referrals to other facilities.

Patients previously faced costly referrals

For years, patients seeking advanced medical services at CHUB often faced challenges due to limited specialized equipment. Those suspected of having cancer or other complex conditions were frequently referred to hospitals in Kigali or the Butaro Cancer Center.

These referrals placed a heavy burden on patients and their families, particularly those with limited financial means. Long-distance travel, high medical expenses, and treatment delays sometimes led to serious health complications and, in extreme cases, loss of life.

New equipment marks a turning point

During an event held at CHUB on February 8, 2026, to mark the International Day of the Sick, hospital authorities officially announced the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment.

The newly installed machines include advanced cancer screening tools, MRI scanners, and other diagnostic devices that were previously unavailable at the facility. Hospital officials said the upgrade will shorten waiting times, improve early diagnosis, and reduce both medical and transport costs for patients.

CHUB to reduce referrals by over 75 percent

Speaking at the event, CHUB Director General Dr. Christian Ngarambe said the hospital has prioritized strengthening its technical capacity to ensure patients receive comprehensive care closer to home.

“These new machines will significantly reduce the number of patients traveling to Kigali for specialized tests,” Dr. Ngarambe said. “Previously, over 75 percent of patients we referred elsewhere were going for MRI examinations. With this equipment now available, we expect a sharp reduction in referrals.”

He added that the new facilities will enable CHUB to manage complex diseases more effectively, including cancer, neurological disorders, and other conditions requiring advanced imaging and diagnosis.

Improved access to quality healthcare in Southern Province

The expansion of CHUB’s medical services is expected to transform healthcare delivery in Rwanda’s Southern Province. Patients will now access high-quality specialized care locally, reducing pressure on national referral hospitals and improving overall health outcomes.

Health officials say the investment aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy to decentralize specialized healthcare services, improve early disease detection, and ensure equitable access to advanced medical treatment across the country.
