Universities across East Africa have launched a new regional network aimed at advancing artificial intelligence research and education. The initiative was introduced by the Inter-University Council for East Africa in collaboration with the East African Science and Technology Commission and the German development agency GIZ.
The Regional Network on Artificial Intelligence in Education and Research was officially unveiled on March 30 during the fourth East African Community Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Conference held at the Kigali Convention Centre.
The program operates under the East African Community AI Alliance project and reflects a coordinated effort to build stronger AI ecosystems across the region.
Building Collaboration Across Universities
The new network aims to connect universities and research institutions across East African Community member states. Organizers have issued a call for participation, inviting institutions to join as nodes within the network.
Through this structure, universities will collaborate on joint research projects, share knowledge, and develop AI focused academic programs. The initiative also seeks to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in shaping AI innovation and policy.
By encouraging collaboration, the network addresses the need for a unified regional approach to emerging technologies.
Advancing AI Education and Research
Artificial intelligence continues to influence multiple sectors, including healthcare, finance, agriculture, and education. However, many regions face challenges in building sufficient expertise and infrastructure.
The network aims to close this gap by supporting capacity building in universities. This includes developing AI curricula, training researchers, and promoting practical applications of AI technologies.
By integrating AI into higher education systems, the initiative prepares students for careers in data science, machine learning, and intelligent systems.
Supporting Innovation and Knowledge Sharing
A key objective of the network is to create a platform for knowledge exchange. Universities will share research findings, collaborate on innovation projects, and contribute to solving regional challenges using AI.
This approach encourages the development of locally relevant solutions. Instead of relying solely on external technologies, institutions can design systems that reflect regional needs and conditions.
The network also promotes multidisciplinary collaboration, bringing together experts from fields such as engineering, computer science, and social sciences.
Leadership Emphasizes Regional Cooperation
Leaders from participating organizations highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts in advancing AI across East Africa.
Sylvance Okoth, Executive Secretary of EASTECO, Idris A. Rai, Acting Executive Secretary of IUCEA, and David Roos, Head of Program for GIZ in Tanzania and the East African Community, all stressed the need for collaboration between institutions.
They noted that regional partnerships can accelerate innovation, improve resource sharing, and strengthen the global competitiveness of East African universities.
The launch of the AI network marks a significant step toward building a regional innovation ecosystem. As universities collaborate more closely, they can drive research, develop talent, and support economic growth.
The initiative also positions East Africa to play a more active role in global AI development. By investing in education and research, the region can create sustainable pathways for technological advancement.
In the coming years, the success of the network will depend on participation, funding, and the ability to translate research into real world applications.
