Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to serve his prison sentence in solitary confinement after being convicted of illegally using campaign funds during his 2007 re-election campaign.
The announcement was made by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), which reported that Sarkozy will be held in a nine-square-meter cell in the section designated for prisoners kept alone. This measure is intended to prevent him from interacting with other inmates.
Sarkozy has denounced the court ruling, calling it an “injustice,” and maintains his innocence. His lawyers have already filed an appeal and plan to request that his sentence be served under house arrest instead of in prison.
On September 25, 2025, the Paris court sentenced the 70-year-old Sarkozy to five years in prison, following his conviction for crimes related to receiving financial support from Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan leader, during his presidential campaign.
The court ruled that Sarkozy had promised Gaddafi favors in exchange for funds, which would help him improve his international image.
The judge described Sarkozy’s crimes as “exceptionally serious,” ordering that he begin serving his sentence immediately. Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, becomes the first former French president in modern European history to be imprisoned after leaving office. He is scheduled to start his sentence on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
