Kirehe: Police shoot motorcycle taxi murder suspect during escape attempt

Kirehe police shoot murder suspect Dukuzumuremyi Eric after he attempted to escape while guiding officers to stolen items linked to the killing of a motorcycle taxi driver. The incident has raised public attention on crime prevention and police response in Rwanda’s Eastern Province.

Incident details in Kirehe District

Rwanda National Police in the Eastern Province confirmed that officers shot Dukuzumuremyi Eric on January 7, 2026, in Kirehe District. Police arrested the suspect earlier and escorted him to locations where he had hidden stolen property. When they reached Cyunuzi Cell the scene where the murder occurred the suspect tried to flee. Officers shot him, and he died on the spot.

Murder of motorcycle taxi driver

On January 1, 2026, residents discovered the body of motorcycle taxi driver Nsengiyumva Emmanuel in a rice field. The attackers had cut his throat and dumped the body under mud. Farmers alerted authorities, prompting a police investigation that later led to the arrest of Dukuzumuremyi Eric.

Police statement on the shooting

Eastern Province Police Spokesperson SP Twizeyimana Hamdun said the suspect had a known history of theft. After the arrest, police took him to recover stolen items. During the operation, he attempted to escape, forcing officers to make a decisive response.

“After killing the motorcycle taxi driver, police worked with residents to track the suspect. When he tried to escape during the operation, officers shot him,” SP Twizeyimana Hamdun said.

Warning to youth and criminals

SP Twizeyimana urged young people to avoid crime and seek lawful work. He stressed that police remain vigilant and will arrest anyone who chooses criminal activity.

“Those who want to live off others’ property must stop. Police, together with citizens, will continue to arrest and bring offenders to justice,” he added.

Community reactions in Gatore Sector

Residents of Gatore Sector, especially motorcycle taxi drivers, welcomed the arrest and police action. Many said the incident reassured them about their safety.

Seminega Elias said police and RIB officers arrived with the suspect to recover stolen items, but he tried to run and officers shot him.

Mukandanga Luise added that the arrest eased fear among residents, calling on authorities to maintain strong security.

Legal context under Rwandan law

Under Rwanda’s Penal Code, Law No. 68/2018 of 30/08/2018, Article 108 states that intentional murder carries life imprisonment upon conviction. Authorities confirmed that investigations into the suspect’s accomplices continue.

The case highlights Rwanda’s firm stance on violent crime and the cooperation between police and communities. As investigations proceed, authorities continue to emphasize public safety, lawful conduct, and accountability.
