Researchers are calling for stricter rules on AI-powered toys for toddlers. A recent study looked at how children aged three to five use these toys. The researchers tested a small group using a soft AI toy called Gabbo.
AI toys for young children are already on the market. However, very little research exists on how they affect early development. The team found only a few studies worldwide, and none focused directly on toddlers.
Communication Problems and Emotional Impact
Gabbo aims to help children talk and use their imagination. However, many children found it hard to communicate with the toy. It often talked over them and ignored interruptions. It also failed to tell the difference between adult and child voices.
In some cases, the toy gave awkward responses. When a child said “I love you,” it gave a cold and formal reply. When another child said they felt sad, the toy ignored the emotion and changed the topic.
These responses may confuse young children. At this age, they are still learning how to understand feelings and social cues. Poor responses may make them feel unheard.
Need for Rules and Parental Guidance
Experts now stress the importance of psychological safety in toys. They say regulators should act quickly to protect young children.
Parents should keep AI toys in shared spaces and supervise their use. They should also read privacy policies carefully.
Many experts believe young children learn best from human interaction. They warn that AI tools may not support healthy development at this stage.
