The Rwanda Premier League plans to award two championship trophies during the 2025/26 season. One trophy will go to the overall league winner, while another will recognize the best performing Rwandan club.
The league recently adopted the name “BK Pro League” after signing a sponsorship agreement with Bank of Kigali. The season is now entering its final four matches.
Debate Over Sudanese Teams
Football fans have raised concerns about a foreign club receiving the main championship trophy. The debate started after Sudanese clubs Al-Hilal SC and Al-Merrikh SC joined the league due to the suspension of football competitions in Sudan.
Both teams currently lead the BK Pro League standings. Al-Hilal sits in first place, followed by Al-Merrikh. APR FC is the highest ranked Rwandan team in third place.
Rwanda Premier League Clarification
The CEO of the Rwanda Premier League, Jules Karangwa, confirmed that two trophies will be awarded this season.
He explained that one trophy will recognize the “Champions d’Honneur,” while the second trophy will go to the official domestic champion.
Earlier, Rwanda Premier League Board Chairman Mudaheranwa Hadji Youssuf stated that Sudanese teams would only participate competitively and would not receive prize allocations intended for Rwandan clubs.
CAF Competition Qualification
The Sudanese clubs did not participate in the Peace Cup competition. The tournament winner qualifies for the CAF Confederation Cup.
If APR FC wins the domestic championship and the Peace Cup, another playoff match could determine the second Rwandan representative in continental competitions.
APR FC Eyes Another Title
APR FC could secure a seventh consecutive league title if Rayon Sports fails to defeat Marine FC and APR beats AS Kigali.
League Standings
Al-Hilal SC currently leads the BK Pro League with 67 points. Al-Merrikh follows with 58 points. APR FC has 56 points, while Rayon Sports sits fourth with 48 points after 30 matches.
The Rwandan league also applies local competition rules, including a limit of eight foreign players per match. However, this regulation does not apply to the Sudanese clubs participating this season.
