Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister and Labour Leader

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing an end to a leadership period that saw Labour return to power after 14 years in opposition.

Speaking outside Downing Street, Starmer described his election victory two years ago as the proudest moment of his political career. He reflected on the challenges of rebuilding the Labour Party and highlighted key achievements made during his time in government.

Labour’s Return to Power

Starmer said he inherited a Labour Party that faced significant political, financial and organizational challenges. He noted that many critics believed the party could never return to government with a majority.

According to Starmer, Labour rebuilt public trust by addressing internal issues, strengthening its economic and national security policies, and reconnecting with voters across the country.

He said the party’s transformation was driven by a desire to improve people’s lives rather than simply gain political power.

Key Achievements Highlighted

During his resignation speech, Starmer pointed to several accomplishments achieved under his government.

He said the UK economy had strengthened and was growing faster than comparable economies. He also noted that wages had risen faster than inflation since Labour took office.

Other achievements cited included increased investment, infrastructure development, reduced NHS waiting lists, expanded workers’ and renters’ rights, higher defence spending, and measures aimed at reducing small boat crossings and closing asylum hotels.

Starmer also highlighted efforts to protect young people online and said government policies had helped lift around half a million children out of poverty.

On foreign policy, he emphasized Britain’s support for Ukraine, the strengthening of relationships with European allies, and the signing of new trade agreements.

Decision to Step Down

Starmer said the central question facing the Labour Party was whether he remained the best person to lead the party into the next general election.

He acknowledged that members of his parliamentary party had reached a different conclusion and said he accepted their decision.

“Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first,” Starmer said.

He confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and would formally resign as Labour leader.

Leadership Contest Planned

The Labour Party’s National Executive Committee is expected to organize a leadership contest, with nominations scheduled to open on July 9.

Starmer said the process should be completed before Parliament returns in September, ensuring a new leader is in place ahead of the next parliamentary session.

Until then, he will remain Prime Minister and oversee what he described as an orderly transfer of power.

Looking Ahead

Starmer pledged his full support to his successor and expressed confidence that they would inherit a stronger and fairer Britain than the one he entered two years ago.

He thanked party colleagues, government staff and civil servants for their service and dedication.

Concluding his remarks, Starmer said he looked forward to spending more time with his wife, Vic, and their children, describing family as his greatest source of pride and support.
