Nick Cannon Reveals Mariah Carey Breakup Sparked His Trauma and Led to Having Many Children

American actor, comedian, singer, and TV host Nick Cannon—best known for hosting The Masked Singer—has revealed that fathering 12 children was never part of his plan. He explained that this happened as a result of trauma and not having time to heal from personal struggles, including his divorce from Mariah Carey.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne Tha God, the 44-year-old said that after splitting from his first wife Mariah Carey, he never stopped to reflect or heal. Instead, he jumped from one relationship to another, which unintentionally led to him fathering many children.

He explained:

“If I had taken time to heal after my divorce [from Mariah Carey], I would have handled things differently. For various reasons, I thought the solution was always in starting something new, instead of addressing the real pain. That left wounds behind everywhere I went rather than dealing with the source.”

Cannon admitted that his lifestyle went beyond recklessness:

“It wasn’t just being careless. I felt like I had to do it because I had money, influence, and access. I could be with anyone, anywhere, anytime. I didn’t plan on having 12 kids—I was just living, having fun, and letting the future unfold. I thought I could handle it all.”

Although he stressed that each of his children was born out of love, he acknowledged that if he had taken time to heal emotionally, many of his life choices would have turned out differently.

“I believed that falling in love again and having kids would bring me peace. But in reality, it only deepened my trauma instead of healing it.”

Nick Cannon shares 12 children, including twins Moroccan and Monroe with Mariah Carey, whom he was married to from 2008 to 2016. He also has Golden Sagon, Powerful Queen, and Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell; twins Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir plus daughter Beautiful Zeppelin with Abby De La Rosa; son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi; daughter Onyx Ice Cole with LaNisha Cole; and with Alyssa Scott, son Zen (who died at five months old) and daughter Halo Marie.
