Growing Calls for Macron’s Resignation in France

Former French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has called on President Emmanuel Macron to resign, saying that doing so would be the most effective way to resolve the country’s ongoing political crisis.

Philippe made the remarks on October 7, 2025, following the resignation of Sébastien Lecornu, who stepped down as Prime Minister less than a month after his appointment.

According to Philippe, Macron should “accept responsibility and step down in a dignified manner that preserves France’s stability and image.”

He added that once the national budget is approved, the 2027 presidential elections should be brought forward to allow the French people to elect a new leader.

Philippe, who served as Macron’s first Prime Minister from 2017 to 2020, remains one of the most influential political figures in France.

Since Macron began his second term in 2022, his presidency has faced repeated political turbulence, marked by frequent cabinet reshuffles. In just three years, he has appointed five Prime Ministers, and since taking office in 2017, seven in total — a sign of the deep instability gripping his administration.
