GTBank Rwanda PLC has launched GTWhatsApp Banking, a new digital banking service that allows customers to access selected banking services through WhatsApp.
The service forms part of the bank’s wider digital transformation strategy, aimed at making banking more accessible, convenient and faster for customers.
Through GTWhatsApp Banking, customers can access banking services using a platform many already use daily for communication.
How GTWhatsApp Banking works
Customers who want to use the service must first save and verify GTBank’s official WhatsApp number, +250 791 900 365, on their phones.
They can then send a simple message such as “Hi” in either Kinyarwanda or English to begin the registration process.
The platform provides instructions that customers can follow to complete registration and gain access to the available services.
Once registered, customers can use GTWhatsApp Banking to perform several transactions without visiting a bank branch.
These services include transferring money to GTBank accounts, sending money to accounts held at other banks, transferring funds to mobile phones, paying merchants and checking account balances.
Customers can also request a statement showing their five most recent account transactions.
GTBank says the service brings banking closer to customers
Speaking during the launch, GTBank Rwanda PLC Chief Executive Officer Yusuf Ayokunle said the bank introduced the service to make banking easier by placing essential services on a platform customers already understand and use regularly.
He explained that WhatsApp has become part of everyday communication for people across different age groups. By bringing banking services to the platform, the bank aims to reduce the steps customers need to take when accessing financial services.
The service also allows customers to access banking services from wherever they are, potentially reducing the need to travel to a physical branch for routine transactions.
Customers welcome the digital banking option
Miss Mutesi Jolly, one of GTBank’s key customers who attended the launch, welcomed the new service and highlighted its convenience.
She said the process is simple and does not take much time, allowing customers to access banking services without going through multiple steps.
Her comments reflect a wider shift in the financial sector, where customers increasingly expect banks to provide services through digital platforms that fit into their everyday routines.
Digital banking continues to expand in Rwanda
The introduction of GTWhatsApp Banking adds another option to Rwanda’s growing digital financial services ecosystem.
Banks and financial institutions continue to invest in digital platforms as customers increasingly seek faster ways to transfer money, make payments and manage their accounts.
WhatsApp-based banking can also create opportunities for financial institutions to reach customers who may prefer conversational interfaces rather than traditional banking applications.
However, convenience also makes security important. Customers should ensure they interact only with the bank’s verified WhatsApp account and should never share passwords, PINs, one-time verification codes or other confidential banking information with unknown contacts.
What the service could mean for customers
GTWhatsApp Banking could make routine banking transactions more convenient, particularly for customers who already rely heavily on WhatsApp.
For GTBank, the service provides another digital channel through which it can engage customers and potentially reduce pressure on traditional service channels.
As Rwanda continues to promote digital transformation across different sectors, services that combine financial technology with widely used communication platforms could become increasingly important.
GTWhatsApp Banking is therefore another example of how financial institutions are adapting their services to changing customer habits and the country’s broader move toward digital financial services.
