Ferrari’s first fully electric car, the Luce, has set a new auction record after a specially built version sold for $40 million during Monterey Car Week in California.
The car, known as the Ferrari Luce “Chassis 0,” achieved the price only a few months after Ferrari officially unveiled the model in May 2026. According to RM Sotheby’s, the auction house that handled the sale, the final price was around 36 times higher than the initial estimate of $1.1 million.
Ferrari USA described the sale as a record for a new car sold at auction.
Ferrari enters the electric vehicle market
The Luce represents an important change for Ferrari as the luxury carmaker expands into fully electric vehicles.
Unlike many traditional Ferrari models, the Luce has a more rounded and streamlined exterior design. The shape attracted mixed reactions when Ferrari first presented the car, with some enthusiasts questioning its departure from the sharper styling associated with the brand.
Despite the initial debate, the auction result shows that the Ferrari name continues to attract strong interest among collectors and investors in the luxury automotive market.
$40 million sale far exceeds expectations
The Luce “Chassis 0” was sold during a charity auction in Monterey, California. Its final price significantly exceeded the original estimate.
The proceeds will go to The Ferrari Foundation, which plans to use the money to support education-related programmes.
The vehicle will return to Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello, northern Italy, before being delivered to the anonymous buyer in the first quarter of 2027.
The sale gives the Luce a unique position in Ferrari’s history, combining the company’s move into electric vehicles with a major charity fundraising event.
Ferrari’s electric strategy
Ferrari unveiled the Luce in May 2026 as part of its transition towards electric mobility. The company plans to make the electric model available to customers at a much lower price than the auction version.
Standard Ferrari Luce models are expected to sell for about $640,000, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The large difference between the standard price and the $40 million auction result comes from the special nature of “Chassis 0,” which was produced as a unique vehicle rather than as a regular production model.
A changing luxury car market
The record sale highlights how electric vehicles are increasingly entering the luxury and collector-car market.
For traditional performance brands such as Ferrari, the transition to electric power presents both opportunities and challenges. Electric technology can offer rapid acceleration, advanced digital systems and new possibilities for vehicle design.
At the same time, Ferrari must maintain the emotional appeal, exclusivity and performance that have defined its brand for decades.
The reaction to the Luce also demonstrates that technological change does not always receive an immediate positive response from traditional automotive enthusiasts. However, its record auction price suggests that interest in Ferrari’s electric future remains strong among high-end collectors.
As deliveries of the regular Luce begin later in 2026, the model will provide a clearer indication of how Ferrari customers respond to the company’s move into fully electric vehicles.
