Jimmy Kimmel, host of the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live on America’s ABC Television, called U.S. President Donald Trump a “puppy of a dog.”
Kimmel made the remark while speaking with Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.
Kimmel said it was the first time he had seen a U.S. president celebrate while his own citizens were losing jobs—problems he himself had caused.
He was referring to Trump’s reforms, which included shutting down U.S. aid agencies working abroad and creating the Department of Government Expenditure (DOGE), which contributed to massive layoffs.
Kimmel said: “It makes no sense. I never imagined we would have a president like this. I hope we will never again have another president like him. To rejoice when hundreds of thousands of Americans lose their jobs is the complete opposite of what a president should be.”
Jimmy Kimmel Live was suspended on September 17, 2025, and later reinstated on September 23, 2025. The suspension followed backlash from leaders, including Trump, who accused Kimmel of mocking the death of Charlie Kirk.
On September 15, 2025, during his late-night show, Kimmel had spoken about Kirk’s killing, sparking controversy.
He said: “Over the weekend, members of the MAGA movement tried to distance themselves from the young man who killed Charlie Kirk, hoping to gain political advantage.”
“MAGA” stands for “Make America Great Again,” a movement of people supporting Trump’s campaign slogan.
When the show was suspended, Trump and his allies expressed great satisfaction.
However, the suspension dealt a heavy financial blow to The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC. Within just seven days of the show being pulled, the network lost more than 1.7 million viewers.
