Former President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and his allies have launched a new political alliance aimed at finding lasting solutions to the country’s deep-rooted challenges.
The movement, named “Mouvement Sauvons la RDC” (Save the DRC Movement), was founded in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 15, 2025, following a two-day conference that brought together opposition figures and government critics. Kabila was elected as the alliance’s president.
Members of the new coalition called for inclusive and genuine national dialogue that brings together all Congolese citizens to resolve the country’s crises, rejecting President Félix Tshisekedi’s proposal to engage only with his political supporters.
They also expressed support for a peace initiative proposed by senior leaders of the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church, which urges the Congolese government to hold talks with all groups — including armed factions.
On September 30, the DRC’s High Military Court sentenced Kabila to death after ruling that he was the leader of the AFC/M23 coalition. Members of the new movement strongly condemned the verdict, calling it politically motivated and baseless.
Earlier in May, Kabila had announced his willingness to contribute to peace and development in the DRC, presenting a 12-point plan aimed at ending authoritarian rule, expelling foreign armed groups, dismantling local militias, and promoting both national and regional dialogue.
Members of “Mouvement Sauvons la RDC” have pledged to fully support these proposals and to actively participate in their implementation.
Kabila previously led the Common Front for Congo (FCC), a major opposition coalition, but its influence has waned amid what members describe as government efforts to weaken Kabila’s PPRD party, one of its main components.
