China, Russia & Iran Exercises Begin in South Africa

On January 9, 2026, China, Russia, Iran, and other BRICS Plus countries started a week-long naval exercise in South African waters. The event took place at Simon’s Town Naval Base near Cape Town. The exercise aims to improve maritime safety and protect shipping and economic activities.

BRICS Plus is an expanded version of the original BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The expansion now adds Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Brazil, Egypt, and Ethiopia participated as observers.

Purpose and Regional Significance

The exercise, called “Exercise WILL FOR PEACE 2026,” brings together BRICS Plus navies for coordinated drills and operational cooperation. South African officials stressed that the exercises focus on maritime security, not politics.

All invited nations participate to strengthen safety and economic stability at sea. The drills also improve coordination and interoperability among the navies. By expanding BRICS cooperation in maritime security, the exercise reflects efforts to build stronger ties among the participating countries.
