A growing number of middle and high school students are turning to artificial intelligence tools to complete their homework, according to new findings from Rand Corporation. While this trend highlights the rapid adoption of digital tools in education, it also raises important concerns about how AI may affect students’ ability to think critically.
The study shows a sharp increase in AI usage among students over a short period. Between May and December 2025, the share of middle school students using AI for homework rose from 30 percent to 46 percent. Among high school students, usage increased from 49 percent to 63 percent. This rapid growth reflects how easily accessible AI tools have become and how quickly students integrate them into daily academic work.
However, alongside this increase, students are becoming more cautious. More learners now believe that relying on AI for assignments could weaken their critical thinking and problem solving skills. This shift suggests that while students recognize the benefits of AI, they also understand its potential drawbacks.
One major issue highlighted in the report is the lack of clear school policies. Only about one third of students said their schools have rules about AI use. Even fewer, just 9 percent of middle school students and 7 percent of high school students, reported that their schools officially allow AI for homework. This gap creates confusion and leaves students to decide on their own how to use these tools responsibly.
Interestingly, many students do not view all AI use as cheating. Most believe that using AI for brainstorming ideas or researching facts differs from using it to generate direct answers. This distinction shows that students are already forming their own ethical boundaries around technology use, even without formal guidance.
At the same time, research from Stanford University through its SCALE Initiative indicates that AI adoption in schools is advancing faster than research can fully evaluate its impact. Out of more than 1,100 studies reviewed, only 20 provided strong evidence on how AI affects teaching and learning outcomes. This gap highlights the need for more data driven decision making in education systems.
Early findings suggest that not all AI tools have the same impact. Tools designed with guidance features, such as tutoring systems that offer hints and explanations, show more positive results. In contrast, generative AI tools that provide direct answers may reduce opportunities for independent thinking if used without limits.
There are also clear opportunities. AI can help teachers save time when preparing lessons, improve the quality of instruction through data insights, and support more interactive classroom discussions. These benefits could transform education if schools adopt structured and balanced approaches.
Still, risks remain. Over reliance on AI could reduce students’ ability to analyze problems, think independently, and develop deeper understanding. In addition, the absence of clear rules may lead to inconsistent learning outcomes across different schools and regions.
Experts recommend that schools act quickly to address this challenge. Educators and policymakers should clearly define when and how AI can be used in academic work. Schools should also engage students in discussions about responsible AI use and encourage them to use these tools in ways that support learning rather than replace it.
Looking ahead, the role of AI in education will likely continue to expand. The key challenge will be finding the right balance between leveraging technology for efficiency and preserving the human skills that education aims to build. With proper guidelines and ongoing research, AI could enhance learning without undermining critical thinking.
