Russian President Vladimir Putin used his Victory Day speech in Moscow’s Red Square to defend Russia’s war in Ukraine and criticize NATO.
He described the conflict as a “just” war and accused Ukraine of acting as an aggressive force supported by Nato members.
Victory Day Celebrations
Russia marks Victory Day every year to commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany during World War Two.
This year’s parade took place under tighter security measures. Hundreds of military personnel marched across Red Square, but the event featured fewer military displays than previous years.
For the first time in several years, tanks, armored vehicles, and ballistic missiles did not appear in the parade.
Putin Honors Soviet Sacrifices
During his speech, Putin honored Soviet soldiers who fought in World War Two. He linked their sacrifices to Russian troops currently fighting in Ukraine.
He also praised Russian workers, scientists, doctors, teachers, and military correspondents for supporting the country during the ongoing conflict.
Foreign Leaders Attend Event
Several foreign leaders attended the ceremony, including Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim, and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also attended the event and met Putin before the parade.
Fewer world leaders joined this year compared to previous celebrations. Last year’s event included leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Ahead of the celebrations, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three day ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump.
After the parade, Russia’s defense ministry accused Ukraine of violating the ceasefire, though it did not provide details. Ukraine did not immediately respond to the accusation.
Scaled Back Military Display
Russian officials previously announced that this year’s parade would be reduced due to the current military situation.
Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Popov stated that military equipment was needed on the battlefield instead of Red Square.
Security concerns linked to possible Ukrainian drone attacks also contributed to the reduced parade format.
