Spotify has introduced a new feature that allows users to access news content in audio format. Subscribers to the Premium plan will receive up to 15 hours of audio news listening per month.
Users who do not subscribe can still access individual stories by purchasing them at a price of 1.99 dollars per article.
Content from Major Publishers
The platform currently offers more than 650 audio news stories in English. These stories come from well known publications such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, and Wired.
Spotify confirmed that these stories will be delivered using both human narration and artificial intelligence generated voices. The platform will clearly indicate when AI is used in order to maintain transparency for listeners.
Strategy Beyond Music
This move reflects Spotify’s effort to diversify its content beyond music. The company aims to encourage users to explore spoken content such as news and eventually adopt longer audio formats like audiobooks.
Audiobooks already represent a growing revenue stream for Spotify. The platform currently offers additional audiobook subscription plans priced at 9.99 dollars and 11.99 dollars per month, depending on the listening hours.
AI and Podcast Development
Spotify has also introduced artificial intelligence tools to support podcast creation. These tools help generate content and assist creators in producing audiobooks more efficiently.
By combining audio news, podcasts, and audiobooks, Spotify continues to expand its role as a broader digital audio platform.
