WhatsApp Prepares Username Feature for More Than Three Billion Users

WhatsApp Usernames

WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new username feature that will allow users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. The update aims to give people greater control over their privacy while making it easier to connect with others on the messaging platform.

The feature is expected to roll out to WhatsApp’s more than three billion users in the coming months. Once available, users will be able to create unique usernames that others can use to find and message them.

Greater Privacy and User Control

Under the new system, users will no longer need to exchange phone numbers before starting a conversation. Instead, they can share their chosen usernames, offering an additional layer of privacy, particularly when interacting with new contacts or participating in community groups.

WhatsApp also confirmed that using a username will be optional. People who prefer the existing phone number-based system will still be able to use the platform as they do today.

Users will have the flexibility to change or remove their usernames whenever they choose.

New Rules to Protect Usernames

According to WhatsApp, usernames will have a maximum length of 35 characters and must follow specific guidelines.

The platform plans to introduce measures to protect the names of public figures and other notable individuals. These safeguards aim to reduce impersonation and make it more difficult for bad actors to create misleading accounts using recognizable names.

The existing tools for blocking unwanted messages and contacts will remain available, helping users maintain control over their conversations.

Responding to User Demand

Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s Head of Product, said the company introduced the feature in response to feedback from users who wanted to communicate without revealing their personal phone numbers.

The change is expected to benefit people participating in large groups, online communities, and professional networks, where sharing a personal phone number may not always be desirable.

According to Newton-Rex, the feature will give users greater control over how they present themselves and interact with others on the platform.

What Changes for Users?

Once the feature becomes widely available, usernames will serve as an alternative way to identify and contact people on WhatsApp. Phone numbers will no longer need to be visible during conversations initiated through usernames.

However, a valid phone number will still be required when creating a new WhatsApp account, preserving the platform’s existing account verification process.

Future Outlook

The introduction of usernames represents one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy updates in recent years. Similar systems already exist on several major messaging and social media platforms, allowing users to connect without exposing personal contact information.

As concerns about digital privacy continue to grow, this update could strengthen user confidence while reducing the risk of unwanted contact and identity misuse. It also reflects a broader industry trend toward giving users greater control over their personal information.
