Rwanda has introduced a new digital platform designed to simplify the country’s growing car rental market by connecting vehicle owners directly with customers seeking reliable rental services.
The platform, called RydeXpress, aims to solve one of the biggest challenges facing both car owners and renters. While many Rwandans own vehicles for personal use or as an investment, finding trustworthy customers has often been difficult. At the same time, tourists, business travelers, members of the Rwandan diaspora, and local residents frequently struggle to locate verified vehicles for rent quickly and conveniently.
The launch comes as Rwanda continues to experience steady growth in vehicle ownership. According to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), the number of passenger vehicles increased from 43,182 in 2021 to 47,098 in 2022, before reaching 51,262 in 2023. Most of these vehicles are privately owned, creating an opportunity for digital platforms that connect owners with potential renters.
A Marketplace for Vehicle Owners and Renters
RydeXpress allows vehicle owners to register their cars online by providing essential information, including rental prices and vehicle details. Customers can browse available vehicles, compare options, and choose the one that best suits their travel needs.
The platform is free to use, allowing users both inside and outside Rwanda to search for rental vehicles through a single digital marketplace.
Unlike traditional rental agencies, RydeXpress does not take ownership or management of listed vehicles. Instead, it provides a technology-driven marketplace where owners maintain full control over their assets while gaining access to a wider customer base.
Supporting Tourism and Business Travel
RydeXpress Chief Operations Officer Ephron Nshyimyumuremyi said the company developed the platform after identifying a long-standing gap in Rwanda’s vehicle rental industry.
He explained that members of the Rwandan diaspora, tourists, and international visitors often faced difficulties finding trusted rental services, especially as Rwanda continues to host major international conferences and business events.
According to Nshyimyumuremyi, digital technology offers an efficient solution that simplifies the booking process while improving trust and accessibility for both customers and vehicle owners.
Expansion Plans Already Underway
RydeXpress plans to expand beyond passenger vehicles in the near future by introducing truck rental services. The company believes this will help businesses and individuals transport goods more efficiently while supporting logistics across Rwanda.
The platform also intends to launch an online vehicle marketplace where users can buy and sell cars. Sellers will be able to advertise vehicles free of charge, while buyers will gain access to a wider range of verified listings.
Digital Innovation Driving Rwanda’s Transport Sector
The launch reflects Rwanda’s broader digital transformation strategy, where technology increasingly supports transportation, tourism, commerce, and entrepreneurship. As online marketplaces continue to reshape industries worldwide, platforms such as RydeXpress could improve market efficiency by reducing search costs and increasing transparency.
For vehicle owners, the platform creates new income opportunities. For customers, it offers greater convenience, wider choice, and easier access to trusted rental services.
Future Outlook
RydeXpress says its long-term vision extends beyond Rwanda. The company plans to expand across Africa, creating a comprehensive mobility ecosystem that connects vehicle owners, businesses, logistics providers, and customers through digital technology.
If successful, the platform could contribute to the modernization of Africa’s vehicle rental industry while supporting economic growth through improved mobility and digital innovation.
