World-renowned film director Michael Bay, famous for blockbuster hits such as Bad Boys I & II, The Rock, and the Transformers franchise, has promised to bring international recognition to a baby gorilla he recently named in Rwanda.

During his recent visit to Kigali, Bay carried his Nikon Z camera, capturing unique footage of Rwanda’s famed mountain gorillas, including the young one he named. He later shared his experience on social media, expressing his commitment to showcasing the gorilla to the world through cinema.

“One day this young gorilla will grow into a Silverback and will carry the nickname ‘Mason The Rock,’” Bay wrote. “I’m going to make this baby gorilla famous in a massive way. Not like King Kong — because that one isn’t real. While filming, I was just 60 centimeters away from the group’s dominant silverback, the father of the baby I named ‘Umurage,’ and I captured some incredible footage for an upcoming film.”

Bay, whose full name is Michael Benjamin Bay, is 60 years old. He is one of Hollywood’s most commercially successful directors. His films, including Armageddon (1998), 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016), 6 Underground (2019), and Ambulance (2022), have collectively grossed over $6.6 billion worldwide, ranking him fifth among the highest-grossing directors of all time.

The Los Angeles-born filmmaker is also the co-founder of The Institute production company and a partner at Platinum Dunes, a film studio he helped establish in 2001.
