From September 21 to 28, 2025, Kigali hosted the UCI Road World Championships, organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), marking a historic first for both Rwanda and the African continent. The city was alive with excitement as residents cheered cyclists racing through its spotless streets.

Among the spectators was Gentille Abimpaye, who, though heavily pregnant, joined the crowd near the Kigali Convention Centre on September 27 to watch the women’s under-19 and elite races. She affectionately referred to the event simply as “UCI,” finding the official title too long but the experience unforgettable.

That afternoon, as she watched the cyclists sprint toward the finish line, Abimpaye suddenly went into labor. An ambulance rushed her to Kacyiru Hospital, where she received prompt and compassionate care despite not having health insurance or any personal belongings.

“They treated me so kindly,” she said. “Even though I came with nothing no insurance, baby clothes, or food they provided everything I needed and supported me until I safely delivered my baby girl around 11 p.m.”

Deeply moved by both the moment and the race, Abimpaye chose to name her newborn Ange UCI Noella, explaining that the name would forever symbolize the day Rwanda hosted the world-class cycling event and the day her daughter was born.

“I was cheering for the final cyclist when I suddenly felt the contractions begin,” she recalled. “By the time the race ended, I was already on my way to the hospital. Naming her ‘UCI’ will always remind me of that incredible day.”

Her husband, Ildephonse Ntarwimo, expressed gratitude to Kacyiru Hospital staff for their swift assistance despite his wife’s lack of required documents. He also credited Rwanda’s leadership, saying such quality healthcare is possible thanks to the vision of the country’s president.

Reflecting on her experience, Abimpaye acknowledged that she should have been better prepared as her due date approached. She encouraged other expectant mothers to always carry essential items and stay ready for any situation.
