Bluesky has introduced a new feature that allows users to read long-form articles for free, marking a major step in its competition with X, which currently limits similar features to paid subscribers and organizations.
The update will allow Bluesky users to access and read articles published on external platforms directly through the social network. Initially, these articles will appear as image-based link previews known as “link cards.”
Bluesky said the feature represents the first phase of a broader strategy aimed at improving how written content is shared and consumed across its platform.
Integration With the AT Protocol Ecosystem
The new system operates through Bluesky’s AT Protocol technology, which connects multiple decentralized platforms within a wider network known as the “Atmosphere.”
This integration gives independent publishers and blogging platforms such as WordPress, Leaflet, pckt, and Offprint access to Bluesky’s growing audience of more than 44.5 million users.
According to the company, future updates will allow users to open and read full articles directly inside Bluesky instead of being redirected to external applications or websites.
The move reflects the increasing competition among social media platforms to retain user attention for longer periods while supporting creators and independent publishers.
New Features Focus on User Experience
Bluesky also announced several additional updates designed to improve usability across the platform.
These changes include a redesigned GIF search tool, improved photo viewing features, and fixes for video upload issues previously affecting devices running Apple iOS software.
The platform continues expanding its tools as it positions itself as a growing alternative in the social media market.
Bluesky Introduces Broader Content Warning Labels
Another important change involves how Bluesky handles harmful or misleading content.
Previously, moderation labels mainly appeared on individual posts or images that violated platform rules. Under the updated system, Bluesky can now apply warning labels to entire user accounts if they repeatedly share harmful content, misinformation, or abusive material.
The company says this approach will help users better understand the behavior and posting history of accounts before deciding whether to follow or engage with them.
The update also reflects wider industry efforts to improve online transparency and content moderation without removing accounts entirely.
Competition in Social Media Continues to Intensify
Bluesky’s latest changes arrive as social media companies increasingly compete for creators, publishers, and independent writers seeking alternatives to traditional platforms.
By offering long-form reading tools without requiring paid subscriptions, Bluesky may attract users looking for more open access to digital publishing and online discussions.
Industry analysts believe decentralized social networks could continue gaining attention as concerns grow around platform control, content moderation, and monetization policies on major technology platforms.
