U.S. President Donald Trump reminded his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that he has no real alternative other than reaching an agreement with Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing war.
Trump made the remarks on September 16, 2025, during a press briefing before departing for the United Kingdom.
“Zelensky has to make a deal,” Trump stated.
Putin has repeatedly expressed his readiness to hold talks with Zelensky, though he insists that any meeting must take place in Moscow. Zelensky, however, has firmly rejected this, stressing that there are many other possible venues.
Recently, Trump emphasized that he found it necessary to step in and push for a potential meeting between the two leaders.
Russia’s conditions for ending the war include Ukraine abandoning its plans to join NATO or any other military alliances, as well as accepting the loss of territories currently under Russian control including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
