City Steps Up Emergency Response

Mayor Mamdani warned that the cold weather is life-threatening. He said the city must act quickly to protect vulnerable residents.

City officials have eased shelter rules to allow more people inside. Hospitals have reduced overnight discharges. Authorities have also opened ten new warming centers. Outreach teams and nonprofit groups are visiting streets and shelters to help people find safe places.

Officials Investigate Causes of Death

Investigators are still working to confirm what caused the deaths. The Department of Social Services said several victims had used city shelters before.

City leaders continue to monitor the situation as more storms approach. They have urged residents to check on neighbors and report anyone in danger to emergency services.
