Sony has announced that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will no longer be distributed on physical discs or CDs. Instead, customers purchasing games from retailers will receive digital activation codes that allow them to download and access their games online.

The move marks another significant step in the gaming industry’s transition from physical media to digital distribution.

New Games Will Be Delivered Through Digital Codes

According to Sony, physical retail stores will continue selling new PlayStation titles. However, instead of receiving a game disc, customers will receive a digital code that can be redeemed through the PlayStation platform.

The policy will apply only to games released from January 2028 onward. Existing titles and games launched before that date will remain unaffected.

Gamers Raise Concerns

The announcement has generated strong reactions from gaming communities, with many players expressing concerns about ownership, accessibility, and the future of physical game collections.

Critics argue that eliminating discs limits the ability to lend, share, or resell games. Many gamers, particularly those with limited budgets, rely on borrowing games from friends or purchasing used copies to reduce costs.

Gaming journalist Vikki Blake described the decision as a significant challenge for game preservation and affordability, particularly for players who depend on second-hand markets to access expensive AAA titles.

The news also comes after reports that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch without a physical disc edition, reinforcing the industry’s growing preference for digital-only releases.

Lootbox Gaming, a video game retailer based in Delaware, announced that it would not stock the digital-only version of Grand Theft Auto VI. The company argued that abandoning physical media negatively affects gamers, retailers, publishers, and other businesses that support the global gaming ecosystem.

Retailers fear that continued growth in digital distribution could reduce customer traffic and reshape the traditional market for physical game sales.

Opportunities and Challenges

Digital game distribution offers several advantages, including instant downloads, automatic software updates, reduced production costs, and lower environmental impact by eliminating physical packaging.

However, the transition also presents challenges. Players may lose the ability to lend or resell purchased games, while long-term game preservation increasingly depends on online servers and digital licensing systems. In addition, gamers with limited internet access or slow connections could face barriers when downloading large game files.
