Rwandan-American basketball prospect Nate Ament has said he would consider representing Rwanda on the international stage if given the opportunity.
The 19-year-old forward made the remarks during an interview conducted shortly before the 2026 NBA Draft, where he was asked how he would respond if Rwanda approached him about joining the national basketball team.
“I would entertain it for sure,” Ament said. “Basketball is huge in that country and it means so much to their fans and their community. So I would definitely entertain it.”
His comments have generated excitement among Rwandan basketball fans, who continue to follow the rise of players with Rwandan heritage competing at the highest levels of international basketball.
From NBA Draft Night to Milwaukee
Ament’s NBA journey took a major step forward when he was selected 13th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat.
However, his stay in Miami was brief. The Heat later included him in a blockbuster trade package sent to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a deal involving two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The selection marked a historic achievement for both Ament and the University of Tennessee basketball program.
Strong Connection to Rwanda
Despite being born in the United States to an American father and a Rwandan mother, Ament has maintained close ties with Rwanda.
During the NBA Draft ceremony, he drew attention by wearing a jacket featuring the Visit Rwanda branding, a gesture that was widely noticed by both local and international media.
“It means so much to me,” Ament said while discussing his connection to Rwanda.
The talented forward last visited Rwanda in August 2025, further demonstrating his ongoing relationship with his mother’s homeland.
Outstanding College Career
Ament entered the NBA Draft after an impressive freshman season at the University of Tennessee, where he emerged as one of the country’s top young basketball talents.
His draft selection placed him among the most successful players in Tennessee basketball history.
The 13th overall pick made him:
- Joint sixth-highest NBA Draft selection in Tennessee history
- Highest-selected Tennessee player since Marcus Haislip in 2002
- Tennessee’s ninth top-15 NBA Draft pick
- The program’s 13th first-round NBA Draft selection
- The 17th Tennessee player selected among the top 30 picks
He also became the 58th player drafted from Tennessee and only the second Volunteer ever selected by the Miami Heat.
Potential Boost for Rwanda Basketball
Should Ament eventually choose to represent Rwanda internationally, he would provide a significant boost to the country’s basketball ambitions.
Rwanda has invested heavily in developing basketball over the past decade through infrastructure development, youth programs, and hosting major international competitions such as the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
A player with NBA experience could strengthen the national team and inspire a new generation of young Rwandan athletes.
For now, Ament’s focus remains on beginning his professional career with the Milwaukee Bucks, but his willingness to consider representing Rwanda has already captured the attention of basketball fans across the country.
