The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention called an emergency regional meeting after Uganda confirmed an imported Ebola Bundibugyo Virus Disease case linked to eastern DR Congo.
The meeting is scheduled for May 16. Health authorities from DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan will attend. Partners including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Pandemic Fund, the African Medicines Agency, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will also join.
Africa CDC said the talks will focus on border surveillance, laboratory support, infection prevention, case management, contact tracing, logistics, and resource mobilisation.
Uganda Reports Imported Case
Uganda confirmed a case involving a 59 year old man from DR Congo. Doctors admitted him to hospital on May 11. He died on May 14.
Ugandan authorities said the patient contracted the infection in DR Congo. Officials also confirmed that they have not detected local transmission.
DR Congo Investigates Cases
Health authorities in DR Congo are investigating an outbreak in Ituri Province. Officials reported about 246 suspected cases and at least 65 deaths. Most cases came from Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones.
The Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale tested 20 samples. Preliminary findings detected the Ebola Bundibugyo virus in 13 samples, according to Africa CDC.
Officials confirmed four deaths among laboratory confirmed cases. Health teams are still investigating suspected infections reported in Bunia.
Concerns Over Border Areas
Africa CDC said insecurity, population movement, and mining activities around Mongwalu continue to raise concerns.
The agency also reported gaps in contact tracing and infection prevention efforts near the borders of Uganda and South Sudan.
“Africa CDC stands in solidarity with the Governments and people of DR Congo and Uganda as they respond to this outbreak. The situation requires speed, scientific rigour and regional solidarity,” said Dr Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC.
The centre activated an Incident Management Support Team for DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. It also approved a 72 hour Incident Action Plan and deployed response teams to affected areas.
Africa CDC plans to assess needs for diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, protective equipment, and cold chain systems as investigations continue.
