Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) in Tanzania has successfully performed 14 penile implant surgeries since introducing the specialized procedure in 2023. The hospital says the service allows patients with severe erectile dysfunction to receive advanced treatment locally instead of traveling abroad.
Hospital officials explained that Tanzanian specialists now perform the surgeries according to international medical standards, marking an important step in expanding access to specialized healthcare services within the country.
Treatment Reserved for Severe Cases
Acting Director General Dr. Abdalla Baja said the procedure is intended for patients with erectile dysfunction who have not responded to conventional treatment options.
Penile implants are typically considered after medications and other less invasive therapies fail to restore erectile function. The procedure aims to improve patients’ quality of life and address the physical and psychological effects associated with the condition.
Hospital Reports Positive Early Outcomes
According to the hospital, all 14 patients who have undergone the surgery have recovered successfully.
Dr. Baja noted that erectile dysfunction affects many men and may have broader effects on emotional well-being, family life, and marital relationships. He encouraged individuals experiencing persistent symptoms to seek professional medical evaluation rather than feeling embarrassed about discussing the condition.
Hospital officials estimate that the procedure costs more than RWF 5 million per patient.
Investment in Specialized Healthcare
The hospital attributed the introduction of the service to continued government investment in specialized healthcare. Expanding advanced medical services within Tanzania allows patients to access complex procedures domestically, reducing the need for costly medical travel abroad.
This development also reflects efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare capacity by equipping hospitals with modern technology and supporting highly trained medical specialists.
Importance of Early Medical Consultation
Healthcare professionals continue to encourage the public to seek medical advice as soon as symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can identify underlying health conditions that contribute to erectile dysfunction, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hormonal disorders, or psychological factors.
Prompt medical evaluation may allow patients to benefit from less invasive treatments before surgery becomes necessary.
Looking Ahead
The availability of penile implant surgery in Tanzania represents continued progress in specialized urological care. As awareness grows and healthcare infrastructure expands, more patients may gain access to evidence-based treatment without leaving the country.
Medical experts emphasize that individuals experiencing erectile dysfunction should consult qualified healthcare professionals to determine the most appropriate treatment based on their individual condition.
