A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, causing damage to buildings and injuring people in several areas of the country.

The earthquake struck at around 7:34 a.m. local time, with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in Chocó, according to Colombia’s geological authorities. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) also reported a strong earthquake in the region.

The governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, said several people were injured following the earthquake, although authorities had not immediately released a confirmed figure. She also warned that smaller aftershocks could follow the main earthquake.

Earthquake felt in Bogotá

The powerful tremor was felt across a wide area, including Bogotá, Colombia’s capital.

Authorities evacuated people from some buildings in Bogotá as a precaution while emergency teams assessed possible structural damage.

In Manizales, images shared by local media showed damage to buildings, while residents urged others to stay away from structures that could pose a safety risk.

The earthquake also affected infrastructure in several regions. Colombia’s aviation authorities reported damage at airports serving cities including Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura.
